Aliya Rubinstein grew up in Wisconsin and has been interested in environmental conservation since early childhood. She received her Bachelors of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in Zoology and Biological Aspects of Conservation with a certificate in Environmental Studies. As an undergrad, Aliya worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madisons Center for Limnology laboratory where she studied the impacts of an invasive species of crayfish on a lake ecosystem. Before starting her internship with The Wildlife Society, she completed a fisheries internship for the National Park Service in Alaska, a dolphin research internship at Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida, and an independent research project for the Marine Invasives Laboratory at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. During her internship at TWS, Rubinstein hopes to gain environmental policy experience and to further develop her knowledge of the legislative process. She plans on continuing her studies at the graduate level in sustainable fisheries or marine policy.
