Exemption Application

In 2009, members of The Wildlife Society voted on a bylaws change that required membership in TWS (parent society) for all wildlife biologists certified by TWS. One of the primary reasons for this was to maintain regular communication with AWBs and CWBs, many of whom had not provided TWS with updated contact information for many years. To avoid any complications associated with anti-trust law, TWS subsequently created a policy to allow for an exemption from the membership requirement for any certified wildlife biologist whose employer specifically requires them to be certified as a condition of employment.

The Exemption Application must be submitted along with the applicant’s employer’s letter confirming the requirement by February 15.

That being said, TWS hopes that each applicant will carefully consider the many benefits — both individually and to the wildlife profession — that come from membership in the Society before deciding to forego the membership requirement. TWS also notes that non-members have no say in the future of the certification program or access to its continuing education opportunities, which are two other reasons why TWS members saw membership in TWS as so essential.

Exemption Applications must be submitted before February 15 to katie.edwards@wildlife.org or by mail to:
